Hamamatsu hosted the 35th Wind Band Convention

The Hamamatsu Wind Band Convention 2024 was successfully held in March. The long-standing event consisted of three main parts.

The first was the National Junior High School Student Exchange Concert which was held at the Act City Hamamatsu Medium Hall. Skilled junior-high school wind bands from across Japan as well as local wind orchestras were invited to the city to strengthen their friendship with local junior-high school students through musical exchange.

The second was the All-Japan High School Wind Band Competition which was held in the main hall of Act City Hamamatsu. School bands that were nominated and selected from all over Japan performed a variety of popular pieces unique to their region alongside newly-composed pieces to the audience in attendance both in-person and online. Whilst the main purpose of the event was to improve the technical abilities of musicians whilst fostering a sense of camaraderie among the participants, we also hope that the event could offer citizens the chance to enjoy wonderful wind band performances and ultimately contribute to promotion of our city as “Hamamatsu, the Capital of Music.” This year, 16 groups gathered in the city and gave a wonderful performance.

The third was an exchange event between the participating school bands and the local community. The high school bands that were invited to the promenade concert at Hamamatsu Station were introduced in the 6th newsletter in June 2022 and performed at the Kitara stage in front of the station as a pre-event to the competition to welcome visitors to the city. Additionally, schools who expressed interest had the opportunity to take part in a community exchange program in which local high school students shared their music rehearsals with the public and facilitated exchange between the local high school students.

The Hamamatsu Wind Band Convention is full of youth and passion! We look forward to more enthusiastic performances in the future.
