Murals in the Underpass

Hamamatsu City has commissioned for murals to be painted on the walls of the underpass in front of City Hall, in one attempt to energize the city using the power of art. The set of 12 paintings have transformed the once dimly-lit underpass, into a bright and more enjoyable space. In this blog, we would like to introduce the artist and his process for creating the pieces.

For this art project, the city commissioned local illustrator “Ikimonodamono”, from Hamamatsu. His works are known for being as simple, straightforward, and yet soft.

First, the artist sketched out 12 full colored illustrations, all drawn under the theme of things which represent Hamamatsu. Next, he made his original line drawings larger by using a projector on the wall of the site.

When finished, he moved on to the coloring process. The use of color really brought his drawings to life!

In the final process, he completed the drawings by adding black border lines.

As you can see, the illustrations stand out even more with black border lines. All of the pieces have been completed in full, and you can see all 12 here!

The expressive yet cute illustrations make even the simple act of walking through the underpass fun♪

During their creation process, many people came to support the artist and took photos when they came across the illustrations. The space has become even brighter, now that the murals are completed.

Hamamatsu City will continue to make efforts to brighten and energize the city!
